Finally victorious in his long wars against the English, King Robert the Bruce retired to his lands in the Dumbarton area. It was here that he built a magnificent home and moored his 'great ship' until his death, supposedly of leprosy, in 1329. These things are long gone but the tiny ancient church where part of his remains are buried can still be visited.
We shall also get good views from the nearby seashore of the impressive Dumbarton Castle where Mary Queen of Scots spent some of her childhood and Sir William Wallace was imprisoned after his capture near Glasgow. Add in the many other historic buildings of Dumbarton town, including the picturesque church where Charles Rennie Mackintosh got married, and we have the makings of a fascinating afternoon!
Total distance covered will be about 2 miles (3.5k) over good surfaces and time duration 1.5 hours approximately. Trainers suitable. Please dress for the weather.
