In a small industrial community, lost in the vast landscape of Russia, Kátya is torn between her love of a younger man and her duty as a wife. This insightful new production brings the shattering effects of oppression and isolation to the fore as Kátya is inexorably drawn towards the ever-present Volga river, and the escape it alone can offer…
Following the huge success of recent Czech opera productions – Janáček’s Jenůfa (2015) and Dvořák’s Rusalka (2016) – Kátya makes a long overdue return to Scottish Opera’s main Season programme. With romance, drama and an orchestral scoring that encompasses an extraordinary range of colours and textures, Janáček’s music is both heartrending and hugely uplifting. Laura Wilde, much-lauded for her Jenůfa at English National Opera in 2016, sings Kátya, alongside a cast including American tenor Ric Furman and Hanna Hipp (The Marriage of Figaro 2016). Distinguished mezzo Patricia Bardon is meddling mother-in-law Kabanicha. Stuart Stratford conducts.
Sung in Czech with English supertitles
