The original star cross'd lovers.

Two young people meet and fall in love. It should be simple. But all the forces in their universe conspire to tear them apart. Bard in the Botanics presents a thrilling new outdoor production of Shakespeare's tragic love story. It's a story about young lovers right now, battling prejudice and old animosities, rejecting the expectations of the world and its labels. Their love is strong and true. But is it strong enough?

Fall in love and break your heart - join us for this unmissable retelling of the greatest ever romance...

Antony & Cleopatra

Previews: Thurs 21st June 8.00 p.m. (Preview tickets: £12)

Performances: Fri 22nd June – Sat 7th July (no performances on Sundays or Mondays) 8.00 p.m.

The Roman general and emperor, Mark Antony, neglects his empire for a life of decadent seduction with his mistress, Cleopatra, queen of Egypt. As their passion threatens to consume themselves and those around them, the pair are torn between love and duty – can their relationship survive when their actions affect the fate of nations? What price are youwilling to pay for love?

Featuring two of the most iconic lovers in all of history and staged in the magnificent surroundings of the Kibble Palace, Shakespeare’s epic romance returns to Bard in the Botanics for the first time in fifteen years.

Much Ado About Nothing

Previews: Wed 11th and Thurs 12th July 7.45 p.m. (Preview tickets: £12)

Performances: Fri 13th July – Sat 28th July (no performances on Sundays or Mondays) 7.45 p.m.

They might just be the perfect couple.
This brand new outdoor production of Shakespeare's joyous comedy places romantic
misfits Benedick and Beatrice at the heart of a world populated by freaks and oddities; a Victorian travelling circus. And anything can and does happen when this theatrical cast of characters get together for a party...
Much Ado About Nothing fizzes with sparkling wit and romance. Although the path of true love certainly does not run smooth, as the lovers face obstacles both accidental and on purpose, it’s impossible not to be swept along by the original and best romcom.

Edward II

Previews: Thurs 21st July 8p.m. (Preview tickets: £12)

Performances: Fri 22nd June – Sat 28th July (no performances on Sundays or Mondays) 7.45 p.m.

Hot on the heels of his coronation, Edward II recalls his lover Gaveston from exile, lavishing him with titles and riches. Their all-consuming love makes enemies of the establishment, alienates the King’s once-devoted Queen and threatens to tear the kingdom to pieces. A political thriller and an intense love story, Edward II is a powerful exploration of how far society will go to destroy a love seen as taboo.

After the success of Doctor Faustus in 2016, Bard in the Botanics returns to the work of Christopher Marlowe as part of “Writing the Renaissance”, our strand of work exploring the playwrights who influenced Shakespeare. This new adaptation, featuring 4 actors, is a rare opportunity for audiences to enjoy Marlowe’s magnificent, erotic and violent story, featuring the first openly gay couple in English drama.

Please note that the performances are outdoors, subject to cancellation in the event of adverse weather. Seating is not provided for this performance - stools are available for hire or audiences may bring their own seating.

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for Bard in the Botanics 2018: The Star Cross’d Lovers Season are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
