James Mackenzie

About James Mackenzie

Hailing from Inverness and now living in Germany, James has been touring up and down the country to sold out crowds from Hamburg to Nürnberg.

From touring the UK, playing sold out shows in Germany and opening for bands such as Runrig and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, James has continued to develop his craft by combining strong traditional elements and charismatic vocals with a fresh and credible contemporary swagger.

Initially coming to widespread attention in 2011 fronting James Mackenzie and The Aquascene, he struck out and started performing solo a year later. A charismatic and engaging performer, he has continued to develop this early artistic drive, and now boasts an inventive maturity. All of this work and craft culminated in a watershed year for James in 2015. The release of EP Winter – described by one critic as ‘a great showcase for
Mackenzie’s warm, husky vocals…truly heartwarming to listen’ – led to James receiving the ‘One to Watch 2015’ award from Highland radio station MFR.

Over the years, James has supported some of the country’s great artists – Gallagher and Lyle, Hue and Cry, Roddy Woomble and Midge Ure, and has played many Scottish festivals – including XpoNorth, Eden Festival, Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, Brew at the Bog, HebCelt and Jocktoberfest.

James has released 3 EPs and a live album and is currently working with the Vitosha Philharmonic Orchestra in Sofia, Bulgaria with a debut album expected at the end of the year.
