Glasgow’s iconic George Square will be the beating heart of Festival 2018 during the 2018 European Championships, creating a carnival atmosphere through a spectacular line up that will delight all ages and put Glasgow and Scotland’s renowned creativity in the spotlight.

As you enter George Square, marvel at a spectacular commission by world-renowned artists Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan, who also designed the vibrant and colourful Festival 2018 logo, before settling in to enjoy the carnival atmosphere and delicious Scottish food and drink. The big stage programme celebrates Glasgow’s status as a UNESCO City of Music with diverse and exciting line up of performances, alongside dance, theatre and much more. Come ready to play and explore – our installations PIVOT and BPM will capture the imaginations of all the family.

The Opening Party

The big stage programme features some of the most exciting names in Scottish music today - The Ayoub Sisters, SAY Award-winners Sacred Paws and Mercury Music Prize-nominated C Duncan - alongside a celebration of the European Championships sports and the people who have been part of the Glasgow 2018 journey. More performances and special guests from the worlds of culture and sport to be announced!

Beats Per Minute

1st August - 12th August / Every Half hour / Free
Set inside a large geodesic dome in George Square, this immersive, audio-visual event allows you to experience the beating hearts and adrenalin of extraordinary athletes, through cutting-edge technology.

Wearing headphones and vibrating sub-pacs attached to your chest, you will hear and feel the athletes’ heartbeats as they undertake their incredible feats of endurance and recount their journeys of competing at international level.
Accompanied by stunning visuals, this riveting, fully immersive experience will be fifteen minutes of the Festival you will never forget.

This free event is suitable for all ages and accessible for all abilities.
Look out for the exclusive BPM Showdown live events happening in the dome over closing weekend.

Presented by Raw Material and Pachamama Productions.

Every half hour. Beats Per Minute will involve the use of strobe lighting, projection and Subpac technology. Women that are pregnant or who could possibly be pregnant should not use the SUBPAC. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend and strongly discourage usage of a SUBPAC by any persons with a pacemaker or other internal implanted bodily devices whatsoever.


Citizens of Everywhere: Douglas Gordon and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra

George Square hosts an exceptional collaboration between internationally renowned visual artist Douglas Gordon and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Douglas Gordon curates a programme that responds to the rich heritage of George Square, as the civic heart of the city and where citizens gather for their collective voice to be heard, to bring a unique element that melds classical and contemporary sounds and voices for one night only. One of the cornerstones of the programme is a re-working for orchestration of a Mogwai composition entitled Music For A Forgotten Future (The Singing Mountain) which is to be performed live for the first time in George Square.


Sonic Youths

2nd August / 10.30am - 5pm / Free
A youth music showcase featuring some of Scotland’s most exciting young artists.

Behind The Noise presents SQUARE GO! - Behind The Noise is an award winning music and skills project engaging with around 100 young people from Glasgow and Renfrewshire each year. SQUARE GO! will feature a number of artists who have come through the project. In addition to performing their own original material each band will perform a cover version from a well known Scottish band or artist including Annie Lennox, Simple Minds, The Waterboys, Steelers Wheel, Alabama 3, Primal Scream and many more. A truly unmissable event!

Hit the Road is a youth touring project which takes young artists on their first tours across Scotland where they acquire the skills needed to succeed as a professional touring musician. Young artists aged between 14 – 19 develop these skills by meeting and working alongside relevant industry professionals such as promoters, bookers, tour managers, backline techs and sound engineers. They are also invited to attend professionally led workshops on topics such as photography, videography and social media. These workshops provide our artists with the various marketing tools needed to maximise the potential of their band.


Mix the City Live

This exciting live collaborative night launches Mix the City: Glasgow and Berlin – an online interactive music platform where you can create and mix your very own soundscape of these two creative powerhouses. Glasgow was awarded UNESCO City of Music status in 2008.

Curated by Alun Woodward, a founding member of indie rock stalwarts The Delgados and co-founder of the Chemikal Underground record label, there isn’t a Glasgow-based musician that Alun doesn’t know, so who better to put together this one time only gig!


Piping Live! presents the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland and Friends

3rd August / Midday - 5pm / Free
Join The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland and two other young pipe bands as they parade through the streets of Glasgow. Once they arrive in George Square, they will hold come and try sessions where you can try the bagpipes and drums, as well as putting on performances on the stage. These short concerts will leave you amazed by these talented young players.

A wandering walk with books mapping wildness in the green howe of Glasgow.

Join The Walking Library on a wander through the green howe (Glasgow). Select a book to share and help create a map of wild nature – sleekit creatures, willow haughs and forceful flowers – on a slow walk from the City Centre to Glasgow Green.


Byres Road Big Band

Catch a set by Byres Road Big Band - a jazz band based in Glasgow's West End, under the direction of saxophonist Paul Towndrow.


Festival 2018 Carnival Procession

Join us for an extra special Festival 2018 Carnival Procession and watch the streets of Glasgow come alive with local and international performers and community groups.

A vibrant feast of music, dance and street performance the colourful celebration and hundreds of revellers, will make its way through the city streets taking in the Festival 2018 sites and finishing at Go Live! At the Green.

The procession will be the culmination of months of work developed with community groups, schools and artists from the four corners of Glasgow and beyond who have been exploring and celebrating our Shared Differences.


Impulse Relay (Indepen-dance Young 1’z and Sensatronic Lab)

4th August / 10.30am - 11am / Free
Impulse Relay is an exciting new collaboration between dancers from Indepen-dance Young 1’z and musicians from Sensatronic Lab. Working together under the direction of choreographer Cheryl McChesney, along with Indepen-dance and Sensatronic artists. The group is comprised of disabled and non-disabled young people. Using cutting-edge digital technology, the dancers’ movements create sounds, blending seamlessly with the musicians’ soundtrack. The piece is inspired by themes of autonomy, confidence, pride and competition, all of which strongly relate to the 2018 Championships.


Mass Gaelic Ceilidh with the Glenfinnan Ceilidh Band

An early summer ceilidh, traditional style with Gaelic song and cracking music form the acclaimed Glenfinnan Ceilidh Band.

Get into the party spirit and experience a taste of Gaelic Scotland in the heart of the city. Let’s kick starts the championships with the longest strip-the-willow in history!


Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5

We are the shiny disco ball hat wearing, ultimate genre hopping, twisted festival, live stage machine that puts the emphasis on music, entertaining and laughter. We are a party at its most outrageous and ridiculous.

Imagine Primal Scream and Happy Mondays had children genetically fused with the DNA of Frank Zappa, Bob Marley, James Brown, George Clinton and Neil Diamond.

Expect the unexpected when The Dijon Family come to town!


Massaoke Scotland: Greatest Hits Party!

It’s time for your vocal chords to get involved in the BIGGEST MASSAOKE SCOTLAND EVER. Belt it out to your favourite tunes including some sport and Europe-themed classics. Oshun and The Gold – A New Anansi Tale

Through ups and downs, highs and lows, trickery and play, we follow Anansi's journey of writing their own future.

Watch the struggles and fun of relationships unfold, as Anansi begins to flourish and take off like an acrobat.

A playful dance production developed with young people from across Glasgow and choreographed by Mele Broomes.


Sistema Scotland and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra make a Big Noise

Children and Young People from Big Noise Govanhill and Big Noise Raploch join forces with members of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra to perform a special one-off concert in George Square.
Compèred by broadcaster and author, Sally Magnusson, the concert includes a programme of family friendly music and audience engagement.
This is a musical celebration of the European Championships 2018, which also highlights the charity Sistema Scotland’s 10th Birthday, their ongoing relationship with the BBC SSO, the unifying impact of music and its ability to transform the lives of children.


Jazz at Festival 2018

Glasgow Meets Berlin - A Gala Celebration

A celebratory gala concert with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland in Glasgow, and the Universität der Künste in Berlin.

Through a live link, audiences in George Square Glasgow and on the European Mile in Berlin can experience the excitement and atmosphere of the concerts in both cities on the stage and big screen.

The popular concert programme features famous operatic tunes and melodies culminating in a mass singalong of much loved songs from Scotland and Germany. Audience participation is essential!


Be Bop Bairns

Be-Bop Bairns is a fun , family friendly musical extravaganza that helps children express themselves through music , dance , singing , sporty & party games.

JR Green

11th August / 3.30pm - 4.15pm / Free
Somewhere between peat-bog and youth culture rises JR Green, brethren progeny of the Pictish heartlands. Hailing from Ardnamurchan, the most westerly point in perfidious Albion, siblings Jacob and Rory Green offer Celtic tradition fused with unyielding, veracious lyricism and thunderous, euphoric songwriting. The brothers Green have lain to rest the epoch of sexless, gritless folk-pop with their atavistic clarion-calling strains. Thanks to 2015’s Bring The Witch Doctor EP and its two irresistible singles - ‘Nigerian Princess’ and ‘First Blood’, JR Green became fixtures on 2016’s ‘Ones To Watch’ lists, receiving plaudits on the wireless all over the BBC.

George Square will host three musical acts with links to both Glasgow and Berlin. The event aims to celebrate the importance of European relationships and the potential creative possibilities. The event is curated by Barry Burns (Mogwai)

Celebrate the Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award’s highest scoring Eligible Albums with a run-down of this year’s 20 strong Longlist, as well as a special live performance from SAY Award alumni!


The Berrie Big Band

The Berrie Big Band are a Glasgow-based 18-piece ensemble, with a repertoire designed to appeal to a wide age range.

In addition to the occasional big band classic, they enjoy incorporating more left-field choices including the likes of Kraftwerk, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and their favourite TV & movie themes.


The Velophonic Orchestra

The Velophonic Orchestra is a spontaneous bicycle orchestra that anyone can join - just bring your bike!

Over the period of an hour, we’ll explore the possibilities of using bicycles as instruments: playing on bells, spokes, frames, saddles - you name it! No previous bicycle-playing experience necessary - just follow the conductors and experience being part of the band as we create and perform a piece of music to celebrate each of the four-cycle sports of the European Championships.
