About Kelvingrove Bandstand Family Festival

From 3rd July to 22nd July, we have a whole range of activities to drop into, to entertain the kids during the summer holidays or to take part in yourself! Choirs, Big Band music, a kids’ comedy club, Wee Write festival events, an indie record label showcase, even a magical trail in partnership with University of Glasgow, the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow Science Festival, Kelvin Hall and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. There’s something for everyone all taking place in the stunning and dearly loved Kelvingrove Bandstand.

So come on down to the Bandstand!

TUESDAY 3RD JULY
10.30am - Make it Tuesdays!
Take pART! Fantastic arts and crafts activities delivered by Glasgow Museums and Ricefield Arts Centre, exploring the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and other themes inspired by our beautiful Kelvingrove Park. Throughout 2018, Glasgow is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of its very own art and design genius Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

6pm & 7.15pm - Yoga and Tai Chi

After a hard day’s work drop into the Bandstand for a stretch and a de-stress. Bring your own yoga mat.

WEDNESDAY 4TH JULY
10.30am - Wee Write Wednesdays
Straight from the success of this year’s festival at the Mitchell Library, we have some fantastic authors here to enthral and amuse!

10.30am - Museum Mystery Squad with Mike Nicholson
Award-winning author Mike Nicholson will introduce you to the Museum Mystery Squad squad and the cases they have to crack, from their hidden headquarters below the museum exhibits. He’ll get you wondering how simple objects might be mysterious, and have
you thinking up your own mystery in this fun and interactive session

11.45am - Storyfest with Ron Fairweather
Master storyteller Ron Fairweather returns to the Bandstand to share some of his favourite and funny stories. He likes to sing and tell animal/farmyard and Scottish/traditional stories and blethers from all over the globe. All told in his high energy, funny and very interactive style.

Magical trail in partnership with Glasgow Museums, Kelvin Hall, Hunterian Museum and Glasgow Science Festival.

Start your trail at the Bandstand with Glasgow Science Festival who bring some magic of their own before a welcome return to the West End’s very own wonderful wizard, Mark Walbank. Mark has been performing magic shows for over a decade and his kids' entertainment is always full of mind-blowing magic, games and laughter. Mark's interactive approach also ensures that many children will get the chance to come up on stage and take part in the fun.

You’re a wizard!

Every young witch and wizard needs a hat. Come and make one then choose your favourite objects to create your own spells.

Gerry Lyons hosts a programme of the best of our young talent selected from applications from across the whole city.

SATURDAY 7TH JULY
2pm - Community Centre Stage!
A fantastic afternoon of music and entertainment from a whole range of community groups in the city including the Glasgow’s community orchestra, Merchant Sinfonia; Romane Cierhenia an intergenerational group of adult and children performers who celebrate Roma music, dance and song; and a warm welcome back to Voicebeat Choir, Glasgow’s world music community choir, who in 2015 worked with professional musicians to write a whole set of songs inspired by the Bandstand itself!

SUNDAY 8TH JULY
2pm - Big Band Sunday
The Bandstand comes alive with some Big Band sounds!

We welcome back the wonderful Glasgow Senior Citizens Orchestra, here to show you age has no bearing on talent, style and pizzazz!

Byres Road Big Band are a community Big Band which has been running in the West End for over ten years, giving opportunities for amateur musicians to perform and learn. We play a wide range of big band charts, from classic Ellington and Basie to more modern jazz, blues and funk.

Brass Aye? are a vibrant community brass band from Glasgow with a penchant for the gold and shiny, bringing dancing, singing and carnival flavours to the party!

The Berrie Big Band aim to play a wide range of music to appeal to a broad age range incorporating music by Stevie Wonder, Kraftwerk, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and TV/ movie themes rather than just the same old big band standards.

Join Allison for a storytelling journey through the history of Kelvingrove Park, hear about the ancient goddess who sent her pet dragon to burn down the trees, how Jack ended up on a giant hunt, and how the park's smallest feathered friends were crowned King and Queen of the birds.! Inspired by nature and highly interactive.
Suitable for all ages.

11.45am - Day of the Trolls with Ron Butlin
The trolls are back! Come along and celebrate Troll Day by helping them turn their local shopping mall into the best playground ever. Watch Fart-fart and his friends have non-stop fun swinging on the Troll Trapeze and rolling up down the mall on their Troll Ball made of trolls! Troll Fun for everyone with the prize -winning novelist Ron Butlin.

For all the movers and shakers in the family! Gerry Lyons brings back his fantastic Be Bop Bairns (on Facebook) a fun, family friendly musical extravaganza that helps children express themselves through music, dance, singing, & party games. Then the fantastic Celtic Connections Family Ceilidh comes to the Bandstand and we take the floor with the brilliant Celine Donoghue Ceilidh Band (on Facebook).

10.30am - Boy-Eating Monsters and Diabolical Baddies with John Fardell
Bring your drawing pads and join award-winning author-illustrator John Fardell, creator of The Day Louis Got Eaten and Manfred the Baddie for a fun interactive session where he’ll be sharing the scribbly processes behind his own fabulous characters and stories, and giving us loads of tips and encouragement as we join in with creating our own.

11.45am - Maggie’s Monsters with Coo Clayton and Alison Soye
Author and illustrator duo Coo and Alison, launch their latest picture book about Maggie, who loves monsters but is bored with her toy monsters. Perhaps on her trip around Scotland she’ll find a real one! Using her trusty binoculars, Maggie discovers a highland coo, a grey seal and even a golden eagle, but they are not the monster she’s searching for. Eventually Maggie spots the perfect monsters to play with, but it’s not quite what she expected!

Brilliant arts and crafts from artists Laura Sherry and Ruby Pester. Then come and join the wonderful Children’s Classic Concerts (www.childrensclassicconcerts.co.uk) celebrate the European Championships this summer with their ‘Soundcycle’ samba workshop. Bring along your own bikes and turn them into musical instruments or just have fun on one of our Soundcycle Stations created especially for the project.

7pm - Open-to-all Singing Workshop
Celebrating Glasgow’s designation as a Unesco City of Music, musician and Unesco artist in residence Richy Carey invites all ages and abilities to take part in singing composer Pauline Oliveros’ Sonic Meditations, exploring how singing can help us better listen to each other and the city we live in. SATURDAY 21ST JULY
12noon - Come Rain or Come Shine
A family friendly showcase of the fantastic musical talent supported by small record labels in the city, all of whom help Glasgow maintain its place as a Unesco City of Music.
Last Night From Glasgow and friends present a day of independent music featuring some of the country's best indie artists. Headlined by the legend that is Warren McIntyre (with friends), supported by sets from Medicine Men, Mt. Doubt, Carla J. Easton, Codist, Cloth, Yip Man and Toni Woods. We are also thrilled to welcome two international acts all the way from Vancouver, Marlaena Moore and Tim The Mute. SUNDAY 22ND JULY
1pm - Young People Perform!
The brilliant Girls Rock Glasgow project empowers young girls aged 8-14 to ‘….make music, art, change, kinship and space for themselves’. We present the results of their week long summer school.

Then GCAN’s Bold Collective have curated a line-up of young performers, musicians and more to perform. Glasgow Connected Arts Network’s Bold Creative comprises young people between the ages of 16 and 25 who meet regularly to discuss, promote, organise and host local opportunities for young people in the city.

Finally, DLÙ , a young band formed at Glasgow’s Gaelic School, are a modern trad-fusion band and were finalists of the Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Open Stage this year. Their urban upbringings, diverse musical backgrounds and youthful energy set them apart from status-quo trad and folk acts. This group of friends take their name from the Gaidhlig word 'dlùth', meaning tight-knit and close.
