The Gonzaga Lecture Series

About The Gonzaga Lecture Series

They typically take place during Lent and over the years we have been lucky to welcome a range of speakers from across the globe. This year, the theme of the lectures is 'Encountering the Divine'.

Tuesday 12th March: Young Catholics: The Problem Or The Solution?
We are thrilled to welcome Fr Stephen Reilly (Co-ordinator of Spiritual and Pastoral Formation, University of Glasgow) to discuss "Young Catholics: The Problem Or The Solution?" on Tuesday 12th March, 7 pm.

Scotland is one of many Western countries demonstrating a decline in Church attendance, especially among the young, with many asking Thomas Groome’s question of the next generation, “Will there be faith?” How can we challenge and equip our young Catholics to become the solution, not the problem, to the future of the Church?

Tuesday 19th March: Knowing Allah Through the Divine Names
We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Sohaib Saeed (Muslim Chaplain of the University of Edinburgh) to discuss "Knowing Allah Through the Divine Names" on Tuesday 19th March, 7 pm.

A Muslim theologians' reflections on the possibility of knowing and naming the Divine. Dr Saeed provides us with an overview of the significance of the name Allah and the implications of its reputed linguistic origins, discussing Ghazali's approach to the Divine Names as ways of knowing and reforming the self.

Tuesday 26th March: Encountering the Divine through Scripture
we are thrilled to welcome Fr Geoffrey Wheaton SJ (Lecturer of Art and Scriptures and Former RC Chaplain of Imperial College London University) to discuss "Encountering the Divine through Scripture and Art" on Tuesday 26th March, 7 pm.

The four gospels present four "portraits" of the person of Jesus Christ. Over the centuries, artists have creatively interpreted these for their own portrayals. This lecture looks at artistic representations of Jesus, and their basis in Scripture, from ancient times to the present day.

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for The Gonzaga Lecture Series are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
