Hand-Built Photography

This 2-day masterclass offers an experimental, hands on workshop for beginners and hobbyists who are interested in creative image making, which is beyond conventional digital photography.

Hand-Built Photography

About Hand-Built Photography

Using a variety of materials, participants will build, create and load their own pinhole cameras with light sensitive paper. From initial designs and concepts, to image making in the camera through to dark-room developing, participants will produce a series of unique crafted images within the grounds of Bellahouston Park. This is a rewarding, time-based process that involves imaginative decision making, planning and patience.

Participants are welcome to bring their own items to recycle and transform into a functional camera, including tins, pots, boxes and cans etc. This is an accessible learning environment welcome to all.

Day 1
We begin with initial research looking into how a camera works and sources of inspiration, including practicing artists who work in alternative photography.

We will start constructing our pinhole cameras and load them with black & white light sensitive photographic paper, followed by a demonstration.

Next we will then install a series of customised, long duration pinhole cameras around the Art Park & Studio Pavilion that will record the 2 day duration of our workshop – on the second day of the workshop we will retrieve and scan our long duration images.

Participants will be given instructions and guidance on how to shoot the cameras, whilst also looking for suitable locations, considering composition, duration, tone and contrast.

On returning to the Art Studio we will develop the results, scan the paper negatives and reload our cameras in the darkroom.

Using Photoshop we will evaluate our results, consider what images have been created, discuss and review the meaning, context and forms of our photographs. We will discuss how to make effective alterations and further images and print making.

Day 2
On returning to the Art Studio, we will then retrieve our long duration pinhole cameras that were installed in the grounds around the Pavilion followed by developing and scanning our latest set of images.

Using Photoshop we will use simple post production skills.

The workshop will conclude with a mini-exhibition of the participants prints where parents and guardians will be able to attend and see the work on display. Participants will leave with physical copies of their developed Black and White photography as well as the cameras created on the course.

Workshop Aims:
Develop individual and team-working collaborative skills.
To gain an understanding of Analogue Photography.
Understanding light and exposure.
To gain an understanding of darkroom developing.
Considering alternative forms of image making.
To Learn basic Photoshop skills and features.

While we take every opportunity to ensure the details for Hand-Built Photography are accurate, we always advise that you contact the event organiser before setting out for the event to avoid disapointment.
