We’re excited to announce a series of talks that have been programmed alongside Callum Rice’s solo exhibition The Failing Light but Polmadie Shines on display in the Studio Pavilion at House for an Art Lover. This series delivered by a variety of academics, writers, artists and historians aims to expand upon some of Callum’s research interests as well as provide an insight into a variety of subjects touched upon by the exhibition.
Archie Leitch – Man of Steel and Concrete
Born in Glasgow’s East End in 1865, Archibald Leitch made a career from designing factories and football grounds. His Sentinel Works at Polmadie, now listed Category A, suggest a progressive thinker, whereas his stadiums apparently adopted more traditional lines. In this illustrated lecture, Leitch’s biographer speculates as to why this was the case, and why, despite all his success, Archie died almost unknown, in a London suburb, 80 years ago.
Simon Inglis is a British architectural historian, sports historian, writer and broadcaster. Inglis has authored a number of publications including Played in London, A Load of Old Balls and Engineering Archie in 2005 – a publication intrinsic to Callum’s research throughout this project.
In addition to his books he has contributed to a number of television programmes (including the BBC’s Football Focus and One Show), on various channels (including Sky Sports, BT Sport and J Sports in Japan), and many more radio programmes. He has also written for a wide range of publications and newspapers. He is currently the editor of the Played in Britain series on sporting heritage.
