About Hendry and Hall - Large Works for Jazz Ensemble and Strings

This performance will bring to life two large works by composers Mark Hendry and Fergus Hall. Together their work crosses jazz musicians and jazz improvisation with a large string section to create music that is ambitious, vibrant and exciting.

Mark Hendry’s Endangered Species Suite focuses on five vulnerable species from our natural world; the sea turtle, the tiger, the albatross, the orangutan and the blue whale. The work moves fluently between intimate, reflective ensemble writing and exuberant solo improvisation that takes the listener on a journey through the natural world.

Fergus Hall’s Shores is a setting of four poems by Sorley MacLean. Written for jazz combo, strings and folk singer, this work explores the beautiful imagery of MacLean’s poetry that is rooted in the mythology, landscape and natural phenomena of the Isle of Skye.
