Mozart’s Requiem is an enduring favourite, with moments of almighty terror contrasting with delicate counterpoint and a radiant quartet of soloists. The work exists in several versions, as Mozart died before he could finish the manuscript, and we give it a fresh lease of life in this concert, performing a new completion by Gregory Spears with the combined forces of Glasgow Cathedral Choir and Glasgow University Chapel Choir. Before the Mozart, we present Bruckner’s richly symphonic second mass. Although Bruckner broke fresh ground with the musical language he used in this work, he also looked to the past, finding inspiration in the ancient traditions of Gregorian chant. Establishing precedents that persist even into today’s church compositions, the mass is the ideal companion to the new Spears version of Mozart’s abiding classic.
