About Egyptology Scotland Lecture: Golden Mummies of Hawara
Sorry, but this event has been and gone!
Ian Mathieson Memorial Lecture: Golden Mummies of Hawara by Dr Campbell Price
Arriving at the site of Hawara in 1888, W.M. Flinders Petrie expected to unearth a cemetery contemporary with the pyramid (and associated temple, the so-called 'Labyrinth') of Amenemhat III of Dynasty 12. Instead, he discovered thousands of mummies of Graeco-Roman date - a proportion of which were decorated with gold leaf and painted portraits. These finds epitomise our obsession with, and expectations of, Egyptian ideals of beauty and wealth. This lecture reviews Petrie's finds and their reception in the context of a new international touring exhibition from Manchester Museum, launching in February 2020.
Campbell Price first became interested in ancient Egypt when he visited Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum as a child. He undertook a BA, MA, and PhD in Egyptology at the University of Liverpool, where he is now an Honorary Research Fellow. As a student he undertook fieldwork in Egypt at the sites of Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham, Saqqara, and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. In 2011 he became Curator of Egypt and Sudan at The Manchester Museum, one of the UK’s largest Egyptology collections. He has published on ancient Egyptian material culture, most recently a co-edited volume Mummies, Magic and Medicine in Ancient Egypt (Manchester University Press, 2016), Pocket Museum: Ancient Egypt (Thames and Hudson, 2018) and Golden Mummies, Painted Faces (Scala, 2020). Campbell has lectured internationally and makes regular appearances on TV and radio.
