To a new world of gods and monsters! When Bride of Frankenstein opened in April 1935, cinema audiences were promised a heroine “more fearful than the Monster himself” — and Director James Whale’s gothic shocker is now regarded as a landmark of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Boris Karloff is the Monster, and composer Franz Waxman — newly escaped from the real-world terror of Nazi Germany — created a score that defined the sound of horror, as sensuous as it is savage.
Now, in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s 90th anniversary season, it lives again, performed in synch with the movie by conductor Ben Palmer. It’s as chilling as ever, and it’s never sounded more beautiful. A spine-tingling treat: let the Bride seduce you tonight…
BBFC rating: PG, contains mild horror
