A Glasgow-based am-dram group has made King’s Theatre history as its production of Elf the Musical becomes the highest grossing amateur show to run at the venue.
Pantheon Club will this week present their version of the stage-adaptation of the smash hit film starring Will Farrell and Zoey Deschanel over nine performances.
The show runs from Tuesday 21 until Saturday 25 November.
The group, which has rehearsal space on Bath Street, has produced many popular shows at the King’s venue including Legally Blonde and Grease, however this festive treat has proved extremely popular with the Glasgow audience.
Tickets went on sale in April this year with two performances this Saturday (25 November) being the first to sell out. A third performance at 11am on Saturday 25 November, which was added due to popular demand, subsequently sold out. The remainder of performances are either sold-out or have limited availability.
David Robertson, president of Pantheon, said: “Elf has proved incredibly popular with the Glasgow audience. The film is a perennial favourite and the chance to see this live adaptation at this time of year has been a huge draw.
“Pantheon have been performing in the King’s for over 50 years and for many of our members it feels like home. The warmth of a Glasgow audience can be felt on stage and the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of some of Glasgow greatest entertainers including former Pantheon member Rikki Fulton, Jimmy Logan and Gerrard Kelly is a great honour”
Tri Cumming, Artistic Director of Elf said: “Elf is warm and funny with a fantastic score. It's been the most technically challenging project I have ever been part of but it's all coming together now and I'm very excited to be involved with such an iconic show with a great cast and production team. I really hope the Glasgow audiences are swept away by the Christmas spirit."
Graeme Wallace of Paisley who plays Buddy said: "It's been an incredible experience. Everyone has worked extremely hard to put on a show of this standard. What an opportunity, and to be part of Pantheon history with a successful show like this is a real honour."
James Haworth, Theatre Director at King’s Theatre, said: “I would like to congratulate Pantheon with this remarkable achievement. Pantheon and the other amateur groups of Glasgow present high quality productions and enrich the cultural life in the city. I’m proud that our theatres can facilitate their wonderful performances."
The Pantheon Club was established in 1926 to embrace and promote the arts of theatre, singing and drama. Since the establishment more than 200 musicals, plays and pantomimes have been brought to stage.
The King’s Theatre and Theatre Royal have a close relationship with the Glaswegian amateur groups and will host 37 amateur performances in 2017.
Elf the Musical tells the story of Buddy, a young orphan, who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth.
With Santa's permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh realities that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn't even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.
Based on the cherished New Line Cinema hit, Elf features songs by Tony Award nominees, Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (Disney's Aladdin on Broadway, The Wedding Singer), with a book by Tony Award winners, Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone).
