Taiko drumming combines rhythm, movement & energy. It's uplifting to play, is good for physical & mental health, and helps develop coordination & internal rhythm. Taiko promotes teamwork & is also a great stress-buster!
The beginners course is suitable for adults of all ages & abilities, and covers the basics of taiko from the stance & grip, through to learning a full taiko drum piece by the end of the 8-week course. Week-by-week, the experienced instructors guide the participants in a friendly & supportive atmosphere.
The Glasgow beginners & improvers group meets on Tuesdays 6:00 - 7.30 pm, in 8-week blocks throughout the year.
If you have previous experience in taiko, you may be interested in our "Taiko Night" group, which meets at 7.30-9.30pm on Tuesdays at the same venue, or higher-level training at our main base, the Mugen Taiko Dojo in South Lanarkshire. We also run weekend workshops & intensive courses, as well as a variety of further training.
THE INSTRUCTORS - MUGEN TAIKO DOJO
The instructors of the course are members of Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers, UK's longest established & most active touring professional taiko drum group, internationally renowned for their energetic & theatrical modern style based on traditional Japanese drumming. Their performance history include 1,000's of concerts at prestigious venues throughout the UK, including in Scotland: Edinburgh Usher Hall, Glasgow Kings Theatre, Dundee Caird Hall, Aberdeen Music Hall, Motherwell Concert Hall, Ayr Gaiety, Kilmarnock Palace Theatre. They have been featured on various film, TV and recording projects, including recently for Hollywood film "Tin Soldier" alongside Jamie Foxx & Robert DeNiro. Recent performances also include the World Expo in Dubai and the opening big drum sequence for the BBC TV Tokyo Olympics.
In 2002 they opened the UK's first Taiko Drumming Centre, the Mugen Taiko Dojo, as a rehearsal space for the professional group, and as a base for delivering hundreds of workshops of all levels & outreach throughout the UK.
