Day trippers and staycationers taking the train in Scotland boost the local economy by £2.9 billion per year with spend on leisure and hospitality, according to new research from WPI Economics on behalf of the Rail Delivery Group. The food and drink sector alone saw a collective £940 million spend from those travelling for leisure in Scotland.
To help kickstart local businesses getting their customers back to pre-pandemic levels Glasgow Central Station will hold a one-off event on Friday 1st October 2021 from 7am – 11am where travellers will be in with the chance to win hundreds of prizes including free rail travel, theatre tickets and overnight hotel stays via a Spin to Win board.
This is one of 12 in-station events taking place around the UK, as part of the rail industry’s biggest national marketing campaign in a generation!
The nationwide ‘Let’s Get Back on Track’ campaign aims to encourage people to get back to taking the train to see the people and places they love, with adverts appearing across TV, video on-demand, radio, online, social media, billboards and posters (including in train stations, bus shelters and shopping centres). Supporting regional campaigns run by train operators will help to drive local economic recovery.
Jacqueline Starr, Chief Executive Officer at the Rail Delivery Group comments: “As life starts to get back on track, we want to encourage people to explore Scotland and visit the people and places they love the most. This research reveals the vital role people taking the train for day trips and weekends away will play in giving Scotland’s local businesses a boost, which is why we’re inviting travellers at Glasgow Central station and across the country to Spin to Win prizes and to travel with confidence once again.”
Rail companies are helping people travel with confidence by continuing extra cleaning, providing information about busy services and providing ventilation that refreshes the air in carriages at least every ten minutes.
The in-station event will be running at Glasgow Central train station from 7am – 11am on Friday 1st October 2021.
Prizes available during the in-station activity include:
• 10% Railcard discounts
