About Novel Monsters: Exploring the threat of emerging pathogens and their depiction in contemporary literature

Bio-Lit Talks sit at the cross section of Biology and Literature, two disciplines that undeniably feed into one another. Against the common backdrop of infectious diseases, we will discuss their interactions and intersections, exploring the nature of disease through the eyes of scientists, writers, and readers.

Structured as a four-event series and focusing on a new topic each week, join us as we delve, digress, and dissect into words of authors and mechanisms of pathogens: from Scottish texts of the 16th century to contemporary prose, from Victorian texts to Hispanic literature - witness easily digestible discussions on the plague, cholera, sexually transmitted infections, and novel pathogens.

Organised by postgraduate students at the University of Glasgow and featuring authors, researchers, and academics, this free event-series is open to Literature lovers, Science enthusiasts and everyone in between.

Event 1 – Wednesday, 10 November, 2021
Novel Monsters: exploring the threat of emerging pathogens and their depiction in contemporary literature

We head North: in My Name is Monster, a young woman emerges from the Arctic vault that kept her alive, fighting for survival in a post-apocalyptic world where humans have been killed off by The Sickness. As the days pass, she rebuilds a life on her own until she unexpectedly meets a child and takes on a mothering role.

North is also where the effects of climate change are exceptionally evident: melting permafrost threatens to revive long-dormant microbes, animal species move at unprecedented speeds, novel dynamics are developing between microorganisms, animals, and humans.

Katie Hale – author of My Name is Monster – and Prof. Birgitta Evengård – senior professor in infectious diseases (Umeå University, Sweden) – will discuss the threat of emerging pathogens and their depiction in contemporary literature.

As COP26 reminds us of the urgency of the climate crisis, join us in an interdisciplinary, topical discussion on malignant pathogens and monstrous characters.
