Civic Street Open Day - Workshops and activities focused on site activation, skill development and democratic street redesign
On August 6th we are hosting our fourth Civic Street Open Day, this time focused on food! From cooking, to preserving, eating, thinking and writing about food - we have an array of activities and events which engage the shared nourishment of food and community.
Family friendly - with some activities ticketed but lots to drop-in to on the day!
Programme:
Food Market at Civic Street yard - Drop-in
Join us at Civic Street Yard for a food market of local makers in Glasgow! From 11 AM to 3 PM you can find tasty treats to buy and utensils to cook and eat with. Fancy having a stall at our August Open Day? Apply via this google form: docs.google.com
Preservation Workshop with Gomo Kimchi - Ticketed
At its foundation, kimchi is an act of preservation. However, kimchi isn't just a preservation of food anymore, but also of culture, diaspora, place and identity. This workshop will show you the basics of kimchi making, as well as explore the ways foods follow us through life, how they change and help shape who we are. Through this workshop, we'll share stories about the foods that are important to us and why they're important. Each participant will leave with a jar of kimchi to take home.
Eddie Kim (he/him) is a Korean American writer, kimchi maker, and freelancer from Seattle, WA. His poems and one essay have appeared in various journals throughout North America. He recently started Gomo Kimchi LTD in Glasgow, mostly because he was missing his mother and aunt's cooking, but also to share his family's story and kimchi with the good people of Glasgow.
Sean Wai Keung's Poetry + Fortunes - Drop-in
Sean will be doing a 15 minute reading from his latest collection 'sikfan glaschu' (Verve Poetry Press, 2021). Following this, Sean will be giving away fortune cookies in exchange for people writing fortunes of their own!
Sean Wai Keung writes poetry, performance and food-writing with a particular focus on migration, community and cooking. He holds degrees in poetry from Roehampton University, London, and the University of East Anglia. Sean has facilitated workshops on food-writing and food-poetry for the Scottish BAME Writers Network, Glasgow University and Renfrewshire Leisure, amongst others. His published work includes ‘you are mistaken’, which won the Rialto Open Pamphlet Competition 2016, and sikfan glaschu (Verve, 2021), which The Scotsman described as “joyful, earnest and often funny”.
Recipe Room at Civic House Project Space featuring Oxfam Books - Drop-in
Collecting and sharing methods of cooking, growing and eating we ask you to drop-in to our ‘Recipe Room’ at Civic House where you can pick-up and leave a recipe to share and enjoy with others. Featuring recipes from previous workshop hosts at Civic House such as Sean Hussain of Good Stuff and Donna Borokinni from the Glasgow Community Food Network along with Oxfam Books who will be selling second-hand books which are all about food!
Dish the Dirt by Gabby Morris - Drop-in
Using experience design techniques and gastrophysic science for the senses around food. Dish the Dirt offers a different way to connect people to the systemic problems of the food system and soil degradation. Rather than a workshop or lecture, Dish the Dirt taps into people’s emotions and creates a visceral experience that means they develop memories or think and feel something different when eating and experiencing soil.
Why is Dish the Dirt needed; we are losing our soils at an alarming rate, and our soils are nutrient deficient and depleted. Dish the Dirt aims to change the value of food and land and make people more aware of the need to protect and value them both. Not a workshop, but a delightful experience that people can enjoy and explore the incredible importance of soil and food in Scotland.
Vegetable Printing with Old Basin tavern - Drop-in
The Old Basin tavern is a new community land space located at Glasgow canal, close neighbours to Civic Street. The space is for gardeners, artists, creatives and connecting communities. Come along to the open day to help print some bunting with root vegetables!
