SATURDAY 18 MARCH, 10AM-2PM
GET CONNECTED WITH EPILEPSY CONNECTIONS!
EPILEPSY CONNECTIONS
Do you know just how amazing your brain is, and how it communicates with your body using its 85 billion neurons? Join our friendly and knowledgeable team in an exploration of the human brain. Learn how the brain communicates with the body, and the role that neurons play in sending and receiving messages. Find out more about seizures when there is disruption to the messages neurons send and receive.
Seizures can affect or alter a person’s consciousness, behaviour, emotion, motor function, perception or sensation. Do you know what to do if someone has a seizure? We’ll have information on recognising seizures, and what to do to when someone has a seizure, with great short animation films and downloadable resources.
Epilepsy Connections have hands-on brain and neuron models for you to play with, arts and crafts resources to take away and make your very own 3-D brain hat or pipe cleaner neuron. And our most popular display item: a (vegan-friendly) jelly brain! Come and say hello. We're looking forward to connecting with you!
MAKE YOUR OWN PROSTHETIC HANDS!
HANDPRINTS E-NABLE SCOTLAND
Come along to our interactive experience where you will go through the process of making your own prosthetic hand. Try out the existing models, then move on to designing your own hand (using as many colours and patterns as you can), then finally building your very own hand to take home.
CHILDREN AND CLIMATE CHANGE
THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH
Ever wonder how your child perceives climate change within their own daily life? Bring your children to this workshop to get the answer! They'll be asked to answer open-ended questions such as, "When you think about climate change, what do you think about?" by organising pictures and words into groups; they will also be asked to create collages or sketches using everyday craft material to illustrate how they envision the future of climate change.
THE GRAB LAB: HOW PROSTHETICS WORK, AND LOST AND FOUND WITH ULTRASOUND!
UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE
Come and have a stab at the grab lab! Imagine learning about the different ways prosthetics work and how they can be used. Picture yourself controlling a prosthetic arm and taking on our exciting challenge using a body-powered prosthetic grab hook.
You can also discover the secrets of ultrasound and find out how we can use sound waves to see inside objects, and how ultrasound can be used to keep us healthy. You can use an ultrasound scanner to help find hidden animals and learn how ultrasound works!
Our team of experts will guide you every step of the way, providing demonstrations and interactive activities that will blow your mind. Don't miss out on this opportunity to explore the cutting-edge world of prosthetics and ultrasound in a fun and engaging way.
DAVID LIVINGSTONE’S TRANS-AFRICAN EXPEDITION
DAVID LIVINGSTONE BIRTHPLACE MUSEUM
Do you love travelling? Get your backpack ready to join David Livingstone to make the 4,000-mile journey during his Trans-Africa Expedition between 1852 and 1856. Learn how to navigate your way to discover magical lands - read maps, use a compass, telescope, magnifying glass, sextant, binoculars and much more. Be curious to learn communication, organisation, and object handling skills.
SEE WHAT YOU SAY
UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE
Did you know that when you speak your tongue does some wild moves in your mouth? We have a machine that can show you your whole tongue inside your mouth as you are speaking! Come visit us to take a peek inside using the ULTRAsound machine!
KARMA KETTLES
THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH
Could your kettle do more than just boil water? Play the Karma Kettles game. It shows how we might store and trade energy in the future. Make decisions on storing energy, giving it back to the grid, or delegating decisions to the algorithm in charge - but don’t get into negative karma!
SUNDAY 19 MARCH, 10AM-2PM
GLASWEEASIAN PLANT EXPLORERS
UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE
Want to try your hand at making your very own blueprint, the oldest form of photography? Want to find out what connects caraway and spearmint, coriander and lavender? Join the Strathclyde DiSSI team to make a bookmark or postcard to take home and find out more about the chemistry behind the foods and flavours we all enjoy.
CRACKING COLOUR
UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE
What makes an object appear a certain colour? We have fun experiments for you to explore the science of colour! You will control our colour changing lights and wear coloured filter glasses to play our "Guess the colour of the object" and "What is the message?" games. Finally, armed with your new knowledge, you will make your own spyglass which will allow you to uncover the code to solve a puzzle!
