Bruckner Mass in E Minor

About Bruckner Mass in E Minor

After previous successful exchanges in 2011, 2014 and 2017, the St Joris Kammerkoor come to Glasgow for the fourth time in April 2023, celebrating twelve years of joint musical projects between Scotland and the Netherlands.

St Mary’s Cathedral, on Great Western Road, provides a wonderful setting for Bruckner’s monumental Mass in E Minor for double choir, accompanied by brass and woodwind players from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Bruckner wrote this mass in 1866 on the occasion of the construction of the votive chapel of the new cathedral in Linz; the mass sounded for the first time in 1869, in the open air and under the direction of the composer.

In addition to this mass, the joint choirs will also perform two arrangements of songs by Mahler for eight and sixteen part choir by Clytus Gottwald (1925-2023). Gottwald’s choral arrangements of Urlicht, from Das Knaben Wunderhorn, and Ich bin der Welt abhanden kommen, are characterized as recreating the beautiful sounds of the instruments in question using the unique qualities of the human voice (Clytus Gottwald passed away on January 18 2023).

As a contrast to all these late 19th-century choral works, the choirs will perform James MacMillan’s ‘Who shall separate us’, written and first performed for the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral service.

Our concert also takes place at the time of Shakespeare’s birthday, and 2023 marks the 400th anniversary of the first publication of Shakespeare’s plays. We celebrate this with Vaughan Williams’s settings of three Shakespeare songs.
