Paisley-born Karen Campbell is the guest author at the Bookface Book Swap Brunch on Saturday 22 July where guests participate in a book swap featuring 400 books of every genre and listen to a 30 min q+a with the best-selling author.
Open to all, the monthly Bookface Sip & Swap events are an opportunity for avid readers to pick the brains of successful authors and enjoy an uplifting afternoon with people who love great books.
Campbell joins an impressive list of authors who’ve attended the sold out Bookface events, Alan Parks, Helen Fields, Susannah Constantine, Sam Baker, Doug Allan, Lisa Gray, Helen Fitzgerald, and Nikki May are a selection of former guests.
Paper Cup is Campbell’s eighth novel. A former police officer brought up in Glasgow, now living in Galloway, Campbell’s love for Scotland – the people and the place – shines through.
After leaving school, Karen attended Glasgow University, where she studied an MA in English, Drama & French, then, as you do, joined Strathclyde Police as a uniformed police constable.
Karen served in Glasgow’s ‘A’ Division, right in the heart of Scotland’s biggest city – and where much of her first novel, The Twilight Time, is set.
Karen and the polis parted company amicably five and a half years later, on the birth of her first child. She then took a brief career break to bring up her family. Two toddlers later, she went to work for Glasgow City Council, ending up as a media officer in the Press Office, before going on to edit the Council’s staff magazines and other publications. She claims to have invented the phrase ‘it wisny the cooncil’s fault’ during this period.
She then went on to write several novels and in 2009, Karen won Best New Scottish Writer at the Scottish Variety Awards. Her journey and latest novel Paper Cup will be the topic of conversation at the Bookface Book Swap Brunch at Glaschu, in Glasgow’s Royal Exchange Square.
Full of compassion and hope, Paper Cup is a novel about how easy it can be to fall through the cracks – and how the simplest things can offer hope.
Rocked by a terrible accident, homeless Kelly needs to escape the streets of Glasgow. A rare moment of kindness and a lost ring conspire to call her home. As Kelly vows to reunite the ring with its owner, she must return to the small town she fled so many years ago.
On her journey down to the south-west tip of Scotland, Kelly encounters ancient pilgrim routes, hostile humans, hippies, book lovers and a friendly dog, as memories stir and the people she thought she’d left behind forever, move closer with every step.
Karen Campbell said: “The Bookface Book Swap Brunch is such a lovely event. What better way to spend a morning than in a room full of books and book lovers, with good food and great craic? I had a great time at Book swap as a guest last year, so can't wait to come back as an author and talk about Kelly, Collie and all the people they meet on their journey through Galloway.”
Heather Suttie started Bookface during lockdown and the online book group has grown to 2800 members worldwide, said: “I’m so happy Karen will be joining us, Paper Cup is loved by many fans in our group!”
“The Bookface events are great for saving money and being sustainable as the swap element is a big hit people who love a great book, guests recycle books and pick up new ones from every genre, perhaps picking up titles they might not otherwise have chosen to read”.
Participants are encouraged (not necessary) to bring four books to participate in the sustainable book swap where there are 400 titles to choose from. The event is held at Glaschu in the city’s Royal Exchange Square. Tickets priced £30 includes tea, coffee, Prosecco, and brunch via Eventbrite.
