Discover the delights of Shodo at our relaxing group in Glasgow!
We will enjoy practicing Shodo calligraphy 書道 at our friendly in person group using traditional materials such as Japanese sumi ink and fude brushes on hanshi paper (all materials are provided). This is a cultural and welcoming group suitable for both total beginners and those with more experience.
After settling in with a cuppa, we begin with some simple marks and strokes practice with the ink, then working from inspiring Chinese and Japanese kanji characters, relating to nature, poetry or meditation.
This is a practice where we can really enjoy using the Japanese ink and brushes, and be totally immersed in the moment of brushing the character. It is a peaceful, supportive group where you can learn all about Shodo and develop your techniques with each class.
With demonstrations and friendly help from calligrapher Blair Thomson, who first studied Shodō in 2002 in Osawano, Japan with calligraphy Master Wakabayashi, and with zen monks and respected teachers in Tokyo. In 2025 Blair was awarded a Special Selection prize (Tokusen 特選) for Shodō calligraphy at the 73rd Shokaisha Exhibition 第73回 書海社展 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.
Great also for folk with an interest in Japanese or Chinese culture, or arts or language, or Zen, and no previous experience is needed to take part in these groups.
Please book your space through Eventbrite (booking closes 9.30 am on the day of the class). Spaces are limited. Sorry but tickets are non-refundable, unless we need to cancel the class in unexpected circumstances. The classes are for ages 16+. If you would like to find out more please contact us.
To see past Japanese calligraphy activities, please check the Japanese calligraphy news page: drawingandpaintingstudio.com
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
