KT Tunstall
KT Tunstall burst onto the music scene with her 2004 multi-platinum debut, Eye to the Telescope, which spawned the global hits "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See." These songs established Tunstall as a captivating, must-see performer, as well as a Songwriter with a singular knack for balancing introspective folk and propulsive rock. "I feel there are two immediate, recognizable pillars of my style," she says. "I have this troubadour, acoustic guitar-driven emotional side. Then there's definitely a rocker side of me with sharper teeth." In the last few years, the Grammy-nominated Scottish Musician has expanded on these musical selves by focusing on a trilogy of records, where each album zeroes in on a single concept: soul, body and mind.

Between them, their accolades and awards include BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award and MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards ‘Gaelic Singer of the Year’ and ‘Live Act of the Year’ to name a few. The band first came together early 2019 as part of John Philip Newell’s ‘Hebridean Treasure’ show with Macpherson at the helm as Musical Director. Together, they create an enchanting blend of melodies and rhythms that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide.

Beinn Nan Gall (3.30 to 4pm)
Beinn Nan Gall translates to - Mountain of the Stranger. This performance is a meeting place for two cultures. The musical performance inspired by Gaelic melodies, Asian ragas and percussion and Scottish country dancing. Beat makers Hammy Sgìth and Farhad Ahmed heavily sampled from their respective heritages, and use modern dance music to provide a backdrop for reworked traditional melodies and rhythms from Scotland and South Asia. Cèilidh caller Evie Waddel teaches the crowd the dances. This calls back to the way youngsters would dance ironically at PE or youth clubs. Beinn Nan Gall sheds the irony replacing it with enthusiastic enjoyment. She is met onstage by Katak dancer Sudukshina Kundu who weaves stories in dance, reworking these moves into a club ready environment which both cultures can grow into. We seek to show how both forms can entice and elevate a crowd whilst leaving space for each other. The performance seeks to engender a feeling of Scottish-South Asian-ness not based on shared experiences, good music and The Craic

The Joy Hotel is not so much a band as an experience. The Glasgow 7 piece brings a rolling musical thunder of influences to record and stage that may sound unknown and simultaneously familiar, and impossible to pin down. The call and response vocal exchanges between Luke and Emme and the layered harmonies that evoke Laurel Canyon are at the centre of The Joy Hotel’s sound with a swirl of guitar, keys, singing bass lines and Scotty’s accomplished triangle playing making sure there is something new to discover in every song. The Joy Hotel played a triumphant set at Connect Festival in Edinburgh last summer, drawing a crowd that defied the fact that they had yet to release a song.

Shimmering guitar riffs dance between snappy beats and swooning melodies that will have crowds committing to far more than a simple head-bob. Catch them performing songs from their SAY Award-winning debut album Strike a Match and acclaimed follow-up Run Around the Sun.

Hamish Hawk (5.35pm to 6.20pm)
Hamish Hawk is an artist who bounces between scepticism and wonder, who alchemises the quotidian, who is engaged in a constant quest to outwit and outflank the ordinary. With the release of Heavy Elevator in September 2021, Edinburgh-based Hawk established himself as a writer of heartfelt, headstrong, unashamedly literate songs to stimulate both pulse and psyche. Heavy Elevator offered words to savour and tunes to relish. The songs were filmic and romantic, blending wit, wisdom, resignation and beauty with a kind of sceptical joie de vivre, delivered in a rich baritone that has drawn comparisons to everyone from Jarvis Cocker to Scott Walker. A singer of style and guile peddling accessible intelligence: what’s not to love?

The Pixies. The Eagles. Prince. Stealing Sheep. Jockstrap. The Fall. Depeche Mode. Yazoo. Beach Boys. But BRENDA is BRENDA.

Pictish Trail (5.25pm to 6.25pm)
Throughout his career Pictish Trail has resolutely furrowed his own path, steadily creating a unique catalogue of recordings & performances, while eschewing the blueprint of the predictable singer-songwriter in favour of something untidily intriguing. Island Family is the fifth album from Isle-of-Eigg-dwelling electro-acoustic psych-pop artist Johnny Lynch aka Pictish Trail. A strange, unpredictable, sardonic and yet deeply personal record inspired by all from Fever Ray to The Flaming Lips, Liars, Mercury Rev and Beck, Island Family is Pictish Trail’s contrarian view of arcadia; a search for the euphoric in the bucolic. Secret Soundz Vol.1 & 2, his critically acclaimed first pair of albums, were gloriously eclectic slices of lo-fi folk-pop later revived as a deluxe double-vinyl by Moshi Moshi. Future Echoes, was released to further acclaim in 2016, and was shortlisted for Scottish Album of the Year Award.
