Free-wheeling adventures across the idiomatic ‘divide’ - combining music, dance, film and the spoken word - married to an exploration and celebration of the human condition.
Trailblazing, multi-idiom ensemble, The Forgotten Fairground, rolls into town on 14 October, with a gala performance at Mackintosh Queen’s Cross.
The brainchild of leading Glasgow composer and trumpeter, Matt Gough, and Emmy-winning London producer, Andy Bush, The Forgotten Fairground have been busy. Having released 3 albums and 3 short films (premiered at London’s BFI Southbank) over a 5-year period, they’ve been garnering plaudits at the highest level, from across the international Arts community. From Hollywood film and music producers Sid Ganis and Jay Graydon, to jazz luminaries Randy Brecker and Eddie Daniels, to esteemed members of the Chicago Symphony and iconic band-to-end-all?bands, Steely Dan - high praise has been in plentiful supply.
“It’s been both thrilling and extremely humbling,” says Gough. “We’ve just been doing that thing we do - refusing to get boxed in or typecast. Why wouldn’t jazz musicians feel at one with eclectic, chamber music-style orchestration? Or get inspired by improvised dance, whilst vibing in real time with a painter/filmmaker who, in turn, riffs on the words of a poet? It feels entirely natural - playful and joyful.”
"That’s our creed, I guess,” says Bush. “Trying to find that special space. That dimension where one can groove, freely, across perceived divides, invoking an aesthetic that speaks to these artistic strands we all love so much. The studio - with all that pure, potential energy - it’s very much our spiritual home. But a live venue such as The Mackintosh? It’s magical, too. It inspires a kind of alchemy.”
