Join Professor Hamish Fraser and invited panelists, David Clegg and Brian Taylor to discuss the launch of the book The Edinburgh History of Scottish Newspapers, 1850-1950, on which Professor Fraser will be delivering the associated paper: The Scottish Press: Past and Present.
This book looks at editors and journalists in the Scottish Press in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and how they presented the news on key political issues, on social change, on religion, and on empire. It will consider how press attitudes contributed to a Scottish identity and how the growth of non-Scottish ownership in the twentieth century brought change.
Join the roundtable discussion, either in person or online, to learn more about the book's main findings and arguments, as well as some of the legacies and implications for contemporary Scottish society.
Professor Fraser is Emeritus Professor of History, University of Strathclyde. David Clegg is editor of The Courier and Brian Taylor, former chief political editor at BBC Scotland. The event is hosted by the University of Glasgow's Centre for Scottish and Celtic Studies.
It will take place in both an 'in person' and online format. The event is free but ticketed.
