In addition to the collection gifted by Sir William Burrell and his wife Constance, Lady Burrell, Glasgow Museums has an eclectic collection of Chinese objects, mostly acquired and gifted by missionaries, including Surgeon John Dudgeon (1837-1901). These are particularly fascinating due to the personal history behind each piece and how the objects came to be in Scotland.
Join curator Yupin Chung on a journey to 19th century China. Dr Chung will introduce you to the lives, work and artefacts of people like John Dudgeon who gained in medicine from the University of Glasgow. Dudgeon spent nearly 40 years in China as a surgeon, translator, amateur photographer and medical missionary.
