This four week course is designed to offer guidance and support, providing information about their rights during pregnancy, as well as learning practical skills like changing nappies and using slings.
The course structure is as follows:
Week 1
• Physiology of birth / Stages of labour
• Sign and symptoms in pregnancy
• When to go to call the midwife / what is normal and what is not
• Role of birth partners
• Hormones and their role in all kinds of birth
Week 2
• Pain relief options and other ways of coping in labour
• Induction of labour
• Caesarean birth
• Birth plans
Week 3
• The ‘golden hour’ what happens in hours immediately after (all) birth
• New-born appearance / cord clamping / vitamin k
• Feeding a new-born - breastfeeding basics and bottle feeding
• Postnatal body and how to care for your body (stitches, tears, bleeding)
Week 4
• Early weeks with a newborn/transitioning from womb to world
• Understanding baby crying and feeding cues
• Practical baby care (nappies, bathing, temperatures, Safe sleep and SIDS risks)
• New baby sleep patterns, what is normal.
