Derick Thomson’s poetry ranks among the best in the Gaelic language and he contributed to the preservation and development of Gaelic as an editor, journalist, scholar, and activist.
Thomson instigated a number of ventures aimed at promoting Gaelic and had major impact on Gaelic studies as an academic subject. In 1968 he founded the Gaelic Books Council at the University of Glasgow and is today the namesake of the Derick Thomson Poetry Prize at the Gaelic Literature Awards.
