We are delighted to introduce Todd Garner’s first solo exhibition with The Glasgow Gallery.
Telling stories is exactly what Todd’s paintings do. A captured glance, an untouched cocktail, a mysterious gentleman in a hat, these are just some of the details that point to a bigger story.
'Telling Stories' is an incredible exhibition showcasing over 30 acrylic paintings inspired by Todd’s fascination with the golden age of cinema and the continually changing narrative of human interactions. Each painting works as a still-frame embodying Todd’s retro-romantic style. In this work he embraces and continues the atmospheric quality of Ciné Noir found in his art-inspiration, Edward Hopper’s work. Although Todd’s work is largely figurative, there is great attention to detail and the representation of Art Deco architecture.Out of the many places Todd has travelled, he has sought out Art Deco buildings. You may recognise some of the scenes depicted as they are located not far from The Glasgow Gallery.
Todd Garner was born and raised in Southern California and has now been living and working as an artist in Glasgow for the last 33 years.
He originally moved to Edinburgh to pursue his passion for ceramics however fell in love with Glasgow, its architecture and social surroundings. It was not long until Todd began recording his most loved locations by painting them into narratives. His work is a wonderful blend of tales that incorporate the sitters' stories with the venue’s history. Each painting acts as a still-frame providing an insight into the many different layers of stories that have taken place in this exact location.
Expect to see beautifully painted fragments of stories embedded with nods to the 1930s and brimming with character.
'Telling Stories' opens 16th March and continues to April 6th.
The Private View will take place on Saturday 16th March, 2-4pm.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
