Celebrating one of the world’s finest songwriters, through the unique voices of the artists she continues to inspire.
Following a revered debut at The Roundhouse in April 2024, a string of sold out performances and widespread critical acclaim, The Songs of Joni Mitchell returns to Glasgow this autumn with an extraordinary lineup of artists paying tribute to one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
Jesca Hoop, Kate Stables (This Is The Kit) & Lail Arad, acclaimed singer-songwriters in their own right, will perform intimate interpretations of their favourite Joni Mitchell songs in a loving ode to one of the finest songwriters of all time. They will be joined by Richard Sears on piano.
Jesca Hoop
Jesca Hoop, a California native now living in Manchester, has been recording and releasing records of her original songs for 17+ years. Jesca grew up listening to Joni Mitchell and holds her as a standard for songwriting. Recently Jesca presented a 6 part radio documentary and podcast on the life of Joni Mitchell for the BBC. This is called Legend: The Joni Mitchel Story and can be found on BBC sounds.
Kate Stables
Kate Stables has a band called This Is The Kit and spends a hefty amount of time on the road. She has released 6 albums, the most recent of which was entitled Careful of your Keepers and came out in June 2023 on Rough Trade Records.
Kate was brought up in a family that listened to a lot of Joni Mitchell and there's no denying that her music and poetry seeped into a lot of what Kate does creatively.
Kate says, “Joni Mitchell has been a constant companion throughout my life. I mean, what an excellent badass role model. Punk before punk. And an excellent travelling/touring companion, for being on the road but also just for the general journey of life.”
Lail Arad
Lail Arad is a London-born singer and writer, best known for her sharp lyrics, arresting voice and singular live shows. She is also the producer / curator of The Songs Of Joni Mitchell, which premiered at the iconic Roundhouse in April 2024.
Of the project, Lail says, “The organic way in which this project snowballed, from a one-off celebration to a rolling concert tour, is a testament to the absolute love people have for Joni’s music - both on stage and in the audience.”
The first song Lail ever performed, aged 11 in a Gap Kids belly top, was Big Yellow Taxi. She has since released two acclaimed solo albums, published a book of lyrics, toured extensively, opened for the likes of Television and Ezra Furman, had a baby and written a novel, not in that order.
‘Lovingly curated by Lail Arad, ‘The Songs Of Joni Mitchell’… offered a truly heartwarming ode to the music of one of the world’s most inspirational artists.’ - Get In Her Ears
“A stellar line up of artists reimagine Mitchell’s most magnificent works” - The Arts Desk
“Songwriting shines as artists pay tribute” - London World
