Modelling horses in clay was already an ancient tradition by the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Horse sculptures were placed in burial tombs and were intended to accompany the deceased on their travels of the death. The deceased were not the only viewers. The sculptures may have been exhibited to show the status and identity of the dead during preparation for burial and in the processions that may have accompanied funerals.
Sir William Burrell purchased his first Tang horse in 1911 and added some pieces in the 1940s when numerous masterpieces appeared in the western galleries.
