Chair yoga is a version of yoga that is practised sitting in a chair. Focusing on the breath with some gentle stretching, chair-based yoga offers the same benefits as traditional yoga, such as boosting strength, flexibility, and mental wellbeing. Many traditional yoga poses can be replicated as sitting yoga poses or yoga stretches using a chair.
Who is it for?
Chair yoga is open to everyone whether you are new to yoga or whether you’re an experienced yogi. It’s inclusive and accessible and can be of particular benefit if your mobility is limited, if you find standing tiring or if getting up and down off the floor is a challenge. While many of those who practice chair yoga don’t have any specific health concerns it is a great option for people who may be living with long-term conditions such as multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and pulmonary disease. Postures are all adaptable to meet the needs of students.
Benefits
Chair yoga can promote wellbeing by enhancing mood, improving sleep, building strength, helping balance and increasing flexibility. It can also help to release tension and boost the nervous system.
This event runs as part of the Southside Wellbeing Festival 2024. See our profile for more events and stay up to date with us on our social media pages.
