Formed in the late 1960s in Glasgow, The Whistlebinkies made a substantial contribution to the development of Scottish traditional music during the subsequent decades. They led the revival of the bellows-blown bagpipes and were the first ensemble to combine the Celtic harp, fiddle and pipes in regular performance.
Their album releases include recordings for the legendary Irish label Claddagh Records, which also documented the early years of leading Irish band The Chieftains, and their musical associations include Amerian composer John Cage. They have also played across the world including the US, Europe and China, where they became the first western group to play on the Great Wall of China.
