Saltfishforty and Moynihan

About Saltfishforty and Moynihan

Saltfishforty is the powerhouse partnership of Orcadians Douglas Montgomery (Fiddle/Viola) and Brian Cromarty (Songs/Guitar/Mandola). Linchpins in the flourishing revival of Orkney’s traditional music scene, the duo unite these deep-rooted sources with an exhilarating breadth of expertise, catalysed by a creative empathy born from decades of friendship.

Their focus on Orkney music takes in traditional, contemporary and original material, with influences from Americana to East European folk, plus a high-octane whiff of heavy metal. The result is a sound of thrilling, raw attack and multi-dimensional richness.

Diarmaid, Deirdre and Donncha Moynihan are widely considered to be three of Ireland’s leading traditional musicians. Their latest release, Black Brook, has received critical acclaim, with a 5-star Irish Times review describing it as "A remarkable collection… three musicians reaching skywards.”

The trio were part of the ground-breaking group Calico, whose music has been recorded and performed by folk greats, including Lunasa, Flook, Talisk and Mike McGoldrick.
