This model of a dog on display in the Burrell Collection is a tomb guardian, known as a watchdog. Shown in a protective stance, the dog’s head is alert with legs squarely set, ears pricked up and eyes staring angrily. Its alert stance suggests that the dog is in a position of defence, perhaps guarding someone or something from the threat of harm.
A detailed double harness modelled out of earthenware, decorated with oval lozenges which are perhaps representative of cowry shells, has been strapped around both the waist and neck of the dog and attached together with a loop ring at the nape of the neck which accentuates the dog’s muscular strength.
By the time of the Han Dynasty, dogs played influential roles as precious pets, primarily consisting of hunting, guarding the home, and companions. Since horseback riding and dog walking were leisure activities enjoyed by affluent Chinese people, dogs came to represent wealth.
In ancient China, people had deep ties with their dogs, something also seen in ancient Greece and Rome.
