‘When Illuminate returns you should go and hear for yourself’ - Richard Bratby (Spectator)
We are delighted to bring the Illuminate Women’s Music concert series to Scotland this year! Illuminate has existed in the UK since 2018, with the aim to shine light on the work and creativity of women composers and performers.
The series will tour newly commissioned works by diverse Scottish composers, written for an incredible soprano Stephanie Lamprea and cellist Jessica Kerr. These compositions will explore Scottish folklore interpretations through innovative contemporary music angles. Historical and established works by women will be programmed alongside at various concerts, to give a rich context to the strong but neglected tradition of women’s music.
The day before our Glasgow concert we'll be running an open workshop where attendees will see newly commissioned works explored between performers, and hear the composers speak about their works. Afterwards, at 3:30-4:30, there will be a live artist talk and Q&A facilitated by Emily Doolittle. There will be an opportunity to meet all the composers and ask questions in a public discussion or on an individual basis. The workshop will run from 1pm-3pm and the talk and Q&A will run from 3:30pm-4:30pm in person at the Scottish Music Centre, an accessible venue. To book an in-person place, please email illuminatewomensmusic@outlook.com. Both the workshop and the talk will also be livestreamed, and live captions will be available in person and on the livestream. To access the livestream, please visit our Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHTERcEWAyP9PsYzTSpCWwA, or our website where the link will also be posted: https://www.illuminatewomensmusic.co.uk/illuminate-scotland-tour.html.
‘This important project is proving what many - yet too few, still, in the wider musical world - know already: that women have always composed music of exceptional quality, and that increasing numbers are doing so today.’ - Steph Power (composer, writer, critic).
The series are organised by Angela Elizabeth Slater (Illuminate Founder and Director) and Rūta Vitkauskaitė (Illuminate Scotland Director), and funded by Creative Scotland, Marchus Trust and Vaughan Williams Foundation.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
