Red, corresponds with fire, it symbolizes good fortune and joy. It is used particularly during the Lunar New Year and also at weddings and family gatherings.
Fascinatingly, red is a colour we see a huge amount of over the Christmas period. Red also has a wider symbolism relating to love and romance – all of which are often prominent at this special time of year.
Join our Curator of Chinese Art Dr Yupin Chung for a festive talk exploring the different hues of the colour red in ceramic art and flower arrangement. Her showstopper is a timeless red vase.
The vase, with a tall cylindrical neck, is outstanding for its rich red glaze, sang-de-boeuf ‘oxblood’. Its glaze incandesces like the fiery red sky after the rain.
The vase is an exceptional example of langyao developed as an imitation of Ming Xuande glaze during the Qing Kangxi period. The term ‘langyao’ was established under Lang Tingji 郎廷極 (1663-1715), supervisor of the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen from 1705 to 1712, and the term is thought to derive from his name. He oversaw the potters' efforts to replicate the early Ming period's lost formula and mastered the production of similar deep, even copper-red glazes, like the one used today.
The Burrell Collection has a large number of fine monochromes including this superb example of a copper-red glazed vase purchased by Sir William Burrell on 4 December 1948.
