About Introduction to North Indian Classical Music

Listed Under Learning Events

Throughout the course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts of melody (raag) and rhythm (taal) in this rich musical tradition. The course will cover both theoretical aspects and practical applications, including an introduction to the various instruments used in Indian classical music, as well as key elements of composition and improvisation.

Students will explore the structure of rhythm in North Indian Classical music, learn how to count and recognize different taals, and develop an appreciation for the nuances of melody through the study of raags. Additionally, the course will provide insights into the cultural and historical context that shaped this musical genre.

A unique aspect of this course is the hands-on experience students will get with traditional Indian classical instruments. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with and play instruments such as the Tabla, Jori-Pakhawaj, and Tanpura, gaining practical insight into their unique sounds, playing techniques, and roles in ensemble performances.

This course is ideal for anyone with an interest in Indian classical music, whether you have little to no prior knowledge or are looking to deepen your understanding of this unique art form.

By the end of this course, students should understand:

The structure of taal and how rhythm is counted in North Indian Classical music
The key elements of raags and how they are used in compositions and improvisations
The historical and cultural context of North Indian Classical music
The characteristics, playing techniques, and roles of traditional instruments like the Tabla, Jori-Pakhawaj, Tanpura, and other classical instruments
How to develop a deeper appreciation for the music through listening, analysis, and hands-on instrument experience.
