Monday 6th January: Balthasar and the Journey of the Magi
The Gospel of Matthew speaks of wise men, or ‘Magi’, travelling from the East, following a star in search of the newborn Christ, king of the Jews. In Western Europe by tradition these travellers are commonly identified as, Melchoir, Caspar, and Balthazar. From around the 400s CE, the youngest of the Magi, often identified as Balthazar, came to be associated with an African origin. However, it would not be until a millennia later that European artists began to depict Balthazar as a young black African king. Join curator Edward Johnson in his exploration of how and why Medieval Europe’s evolving world view transformed the iconography of the three magi, and how images of the black African king Balthazar proliferated throughout Medieval Europe.
Monday 3rd February: Arthur Melville's 'The Water Seller': Innovation, Experimentation, Imperialism
As with several of the Glasgow Boys artists, Arthur Melville made many trips to West Asia and North Africa from the early 1880s. It was an exciting time of pictorial experimentation and innovation inspired by exposure to different cultures, light and heat. However, he, Joseph Crawhall, John Lavery and William Kennedy were part of a privileged European elite that often didn’t understand or fully respect the culture, faith and politics of the countries to which they travelled.
Join Curator of British Art Jo Meacock to learn more this watercolour, the Glasgow Boys' travels and art imperialism.
Monday 3rd March: Dutch Colonialism during the Age of Rembrandt
Dutch wealth and power in the 17th century was captured in portraits by celebrated artists like Rembrandt. But this time of prosperity, often called the 'Golden Age', relied on the country's vast colonial powers, gained through the enslavement of people in far-off lands. This short talk acts as an introduction to this topic.
Monday 5th May: A Fashionable Accessory? Enslaved Pages in Stuart Society
A young Black boy dressed in an expensive livery holds the train of a wealthy woman's dress in an colourful embroidered panel in the Burrell Collection. But who was he and what was he doing there?
