17.00 - 17.20 Cinema City: The History of Glasgow Cinemas with Erin from Glasgow City Heritage Trust
About the speaker:
Erin Russo began her career in heritage as an exhibition research and design intern at Glasgow City Heritage Trust. Her research focused on Glasgow's Lost Cinemas, producing an exhibition and series of talks related to the architecture and society of these spaces. This interest in the city's built environment and heritage continued to develop and Erin is now the Historic Environment Grants Administrator at Glasgow City Heritage Trust.
Talk focus:
This talk will explore Glasgow's love affair with the cinema. Introduced to the city in 1896, cinema quickly took hold not only of Glaswegian hearts, but of the very fabric of the city. This talk will tour the sheer number of cinemas which once populated Glasgow's cityscape, surveying the diverse and often eccentric architecture of these spaces. Finally, this talk will address the fate of Glasgow's lost cinemas, taking stock of how these spaces function as part of the city's historic built environment today.
