Under the guidance of our expert tutors, you’ll explore essential techniques needed to shape, trim, and complete unique mugs. Throughout the course, you will learn foundational processes, including throwing, trimming, handle-making, and glazing, with the opportunity to experiment with surface designs like slip decoration. This course prioritises building fundamental skills, so you can expect to create 4-8 functional mugs, each with unique design elements and finishes.
Course Outline:
Week 1: Introduction to Throwing Mug Bodies. Participants will learn the basics of wheel throwing, focusing on forming the body of a mug.
Week 2: Developing Techniques for Mug Bodies. Students will further develop their throwing skills, working toward consistent mug shapes and sizes.
Week 3: Introduction to Trimming Mug Bodies. This session covers trimming techniques tailored to mugs, with a focus on achieving a balanced form.
Week 4: Handle Making, Application, and Surface Design. Participants will learn the art of making and attaching handles, as well as adding surface designs, including slip decoration.
Week 5: Glazing. The course concludes with a session on glazing techniques, enhancing the look and durability of finished mugs.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a selection of handmade pottery to take home and the basic skills needed to continue your pottery journey.
