In this unique series of workshops, participants will discover a new way of practicing life drawing. Exploring the intersection between sound, listening, and drawing the human body, and taking a mindful approach - we will experience how different bodies of sound can bring new thoughts and emotions, build deep connections, and influence and inspire mark-making.
Each session is guided by a different facilitator, bringing multidisciplinary perspectives to experimental drawing practices, with accompaniment from an original sound score created by a sound artist.
By tuning into the body, we aim to create a space for shared vulnerability, transforming drawing from a solitary act into a collective and emotive experience. This is inspired by the life-model’s willingness to be seen, heard and drawn as a demonstration of empowerment, resilience, and truth.
“I want the work to speak to human endurance, transformation, and the passing of time.” - Senga Nengudi
“The body is at the core of my work. It represents the pressures, limitations, and also the freedoms imposed on us.” - Huda Lutfi
“The model is not just a body; it is a reflection of the human spirit. The vulnerability of the body lies in the absence of armor, of protection, and as an artist, you are invited to see and feel that truth.” - Käthe Kollwitz
“Deep listening is an art of attention that involves focused attention, listening to the sounds within and around us, in a relaxed but receptive way.” - Pauline Oliveros
Safeguarding/etiquette:
- It is important that all participants enter this space in softness and attune to the act of listening, whether that is to themselves and/or others, in verbal or nonverbal languages.
- We encourage everyone using the space not to make any assumptions based on people’s; pronouns, gender, where they live, access to education, heritage, marital status, class, disability, cultural experience and preferred language.
- Compassionate and considerate techniques are to be used when communicating with each other.
- We want to encourage a shared responsibility for care to everyone involved. - This means prioritising consent and respecting boundaries.
- Respect the model’s comfort, if the model shifts position, or adjusts their posture, respect their needs.
- To ensure Life models comfort, the heating will remain on at all times.
- The facilitator is there to guide participants in seeing, hearing and considering how this informs drawing.
- There will be a Listen Gallery team member present in the reception should participants need someone to talk to.
- No photography is allowed within the space and all phones must be kept in bags except for the break. Those who need to use the phone must leave the room.
- This is a shared space where everyone should acknowledge and have respect for each other's emotional being and physical autonomy.
- Encourage a positive atmosphere, keep the tone positive, respectful and supportive.
- The focus should be on art, observation and learning.
- Always ask for permission before touching or hugging people. Never assume it’s okay to make physical contact.
- Be mindful of your personal space and other participants' space.
- Please try to use toilets before the workshop starts and during breaks.
- If you need to come in and out of the space please request seats by the door.
- We have stool seating, positioned in a circle for everyone to have sight of the model.
