Whether enjoyed in evening moonlight or surrounded by early morning dew, tea is a refreshing way to cleanse and comfort the soul, both in historical and modern times.
This Jizhou tea bowl 吉州窯茶盞, a refined ceramic ware for drinking tea during the Song and the Yuan dynasties. Tea was brewed for pleasure as well as healing purposes. If tea has become more than an idealization of a form of drinking, and the way it is experienced by a connoisseur develops an aesthetic style of life, then one question concerns the relationship of tea to a way of self-transformation. Consequently, drinking tea is a way of communicating with objects as a spiritual act.
