A day of peace in Castlemilk Woodlands
Forestry Commission Scotland welcomed many cultures and communities to Castlemilk Woodlands to celebrate the International Day of Peace!

85 people from over 10 countries, including Cameroon, Somalia, China, India, Pakistan, Scotland, England, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Turkey all came together to share traditional snacks, teas, recipes and stories under the trees, at the event held by Forestry Commission Scotland.
With support from Cassiltoun Housing Association and Open Aye, visitors were brought together to mark the worldwide Peace Day gatherings. Groups contributed different foods and drinks from around the world, such as bobolos, sambuzas, stuffed parathas, maamoul, dumplings and teacakes.
Romena Huq, engagement officer at Forestry Commission Scotland, said: “The sun broke through the clouds by the time the tea was brewed and many people sampled new tastes, made willow peace decorations and planted flowers symbolising peace. The community woodland provided a beautiful autumn backdrop to the celebration and the smells and tastes of the foods all enhanced the setting for the event – it really was a great day.”
International Day of Peace takes place every year on 21st September. The day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace, putting aside differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.
May Fan, leader of the Chinese community group, said: “We very much appreciated being invited to join Forestry Commission Scotland’s event for the World Peace Day. All of us thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and tasting the different foods and teas from the different cultures.”
