Sadly, the light switch-on event can't take place but, due to public demand, they have a programme of Christmas activity on the run up to Christmas Eve.
The big attraction is their giant 42ft Christmas tree which will be lit up from 16th November. This year's tree has a new colour scheme with a centrepiece of a jewel-encrusted peacock which will dazzle in the tree light glow. Princes Square is inviting visitors to take a photograph next to the tree and enter their Christmas Tree Photography Competition to win fantastic prizes for couples; families and selfies – prizes include cocktails under the tree and lunch in Barca for the couples’ prize; a meal in NY Grill for the family prize; and a £50 voucher to spend in any store or restaurant in Princes Square for the selfie prize. To be in with a chance of winning, visitors are encouraged to get a photo in front of the tree – the best spot in on the feature stairs outside Essence of Harris - and tag @princessquare on Instagram and add the hashtag #GlasgowsBestChristmasTree
Customers will also have the chance to enter the Princes Square 12 Days of Christmas Advent Calendar competition. The competition will run on social media from 1-12 December and a prize from Princes Square’s stores and restaurants will be ‘unveiled’ every day.
A new Christmas Courtyard Bar, situated under the giant tree, will be open from Wednesday 24th November and will be serving Christmas-themed cocktails; wines; beers, spirits and soft drinks and a short food menu offering paninis, toasties and sweet treats.
Visitors can create unique Christmas decorations for their homes at the Christmas wreath making workshops and candle making workshops which will take place in Essence of Harris and in the courtyard, under the Christmas tree.
The Princes Square Collective will run every weekend up until Christmas and features up and coming makers, local artists, retailers and designers who will be showcasing their designs and will be selling jewellery; accessories; skincare; clothing and candles. Customers can enjoy late night shopping evenings from mid-December.
There will be a live music programme, including ‘Carols by Candlelight’ on the run up to Christmas Eve. Princes Square’s restaurants have a selection of delicious food on offer on their Christmas menus and are advising customers to book early to avoid disappointment.
Everyman Cinema in Princes Square will be showing a whole host of Christmas family favourites including Love Actually; Elf; Home Alone; The Muppet Christmas Carol; The Holiday and The Polar Express, amongst others.
Katie Moody, Princes Square, commented: “We've been inundated with customers asking if we are having a switch-on event, but we don't feel it's responsible to have an event this year as normally we attract over 10k people - in the current climate this is impossible. We don't have enough large areas and don't want to make people feel uncomfortable. We expect people will be more excited this year and will want to be out doing more Christmas activities to make-up for what they lost last year, so we've created a full Christmas programme including Christmas activity workshops, music, events and competitions.”
With over 25 retailers and 12 eateries, Princes Square is Glasgow’s premier retail and leisure destination. Located in the heart of the city’s bustling Buchanan Street, the mall provides a shopping haven to lovers of high street and designer fashion, beauty, jewellery, homewares, and lifestyle brands while its wide range of bars, restaurants and cafes offers something for every palate.
