The competition, which is taking place after a 3-year hiatus following the Covid-19 outbreak, saw over 800 students participating across 21 different sporting disciplines including athletics, badminton, hockey and netball in a day of intense competition before coming to a conclusion at Scotstoun Sports Campus.
Points were allocated to the winner of individual sports events in order to decide the victorious university.
Jessica Woodcock, Sports President Glasgow University Sports Association, said: “To say I’m proud is an understatement – huge congratulations to Glasgow and to everyone who took part, helped to organise and came to support! It’s been wonderful seeing the return of Glasgow Taxis Cup again this year and seeing so many students getting involved after what has been such an odd few years! Lifting that cup for Glasgow has been one of my proudest moments while Sports President and I can’t wait to bring it back to where it belongs – Glasgow!”
Tabitha Nyariki, Vice President School of Health & Life Sciences, Glasgow Caledonian University said: “Congratulations to Glasgow University. It was fantastic seeing all the teams work so hard to represent their respective universities. Big thank you to everyone involved, participants, volunteers, organisers and fans, you made the Taxi’s Cup successful. We look forward to the next taxi’s cup and look forward to bringing the cup home.”
Kirsty Bannantyne, Vice President Sport and Wellbeing, Strathclyde University Sports Union said: “I am devastated for Strath to have lost the cup this year, but I suppose we have to give someone else a turn… Congrats to Glasgow University! It’s been amazing for GTC to be in person again for the first time since 2019 and for so much sport to have happened across the city. The cup will bleed maroon again next year, mon the tech!!”
The event, now in its 19th year, has been supported by Glasgow Taxis Ltd. since 2011.
Dougie McPherson, Chairman of Glasgow Taxis, said: “We are proud to continue our long-standing sponsorship of the Glasgow Taxis Cup, championing the sporting talent across the city’s three universities as well as the wider contribution these institutions make to Glasgow.
“It’s amazing that even for some third and fourth year students this will be their first time competing properly for the Glasgow Taxis Cup. We must commend the resilience the students have shown over the last couple of very turbulent years, resilience which will stand them in good stead for the competition ahead..”
