Funding opportunity opens for arts programme to develop Gaelic culture

GUIR – the Gaelic word for ‘hatch’ – is an incubation initiative which provides opportunities for artists to create new works, across different art forms, that explore Gaelic culture. Delivered by Glasgow Life, GUIR is part of Glasgow Life’s Gaelic Arts Strategy. Funded with support from Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the programme works in partnership with The National Theatre of Scotland, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and Glasgow arts venue Tramway.

Glasgow Life – which delivers experiences ranging from grassroots community activities to large-scale cultural, artistic and sporting events to benefit the people of Glasgow and the city’s visitors – has had a Gaelic Arts programme since 2004. The charity leads, supports and promotes a range of creative opportunities encompassing events, workshops, funded projects, and partnerships to offer Gaelic and non-Gaelic speakers alike the chance to interact with and experience performances, artworks, and creative opportunities that are rooted in, and explore, Gaelic culture.

Glasgow Life Gaelic Arts Producer, Rona MacDonald, said: “Gaelic is a vital part of Scotland’s cultural identity and the arts have a very significant role to play in ensuring that Gaelic continues to thrive, not only in traditional ways, but also through vibrant, contemporary strands.

“Over the last four years, GUIR has enabled the development of a diverse range of new and experimental Gaelic arts projects across all disciplines. The programme’s latest funding round offers another important opportunity for artists to drive their creative ideas forward to the next stage in order to support and improve access to Gaelic culture and open it up to new audiences.”

Shona MacLennan, Ceannard, Bòrd na Gàidhlig said: “We are delighted to support this important project again which gives opportunities to people to enhance and develop their skills in Gaelic arts. This contributes to the aims of the National Gaelic Language Plan that Gaelic be used more often, by more people and in more situations. This is of benefit to us all and adds to Gaelic culture as well as creating opportunities for Gaelic artists.”

Up to three projects, for delivery in March/April 2023, will be supported through the latest GUIR funding round, with each receiving up to £3,000 plus additional in-kind support. Proposals are invited for projects meeting one or more of the following criteria:

• they focus on unheard or hidden stories from Glasgow’s Gaelic communities
• they open new creative pathways within Gaelic culture
• they encourage collaboration with other artists, organisations, or the Gaelic sector
• they respond to current issues: colonialism, land ownership and the climate crisis
• they are from a wide range of art forms – including storytelling, ceilidh, literature, music, dance, drama, live performance, new writing, craft, film, animation and visual arts

Artists, or arts organisations, wishing to receive further information on the GUIR funding opportunity, discuss a project idea, or receive an application form, should email: GL.learningteam@glasgowlife.org.uk. The deadline to submit project proposals for the funding support is Tuesday, 10 January 2023.
