Annual community dance festival returns to the Theatre Royal Glasgow

A national community dance festival featuring a variety of dance groups from across Scotland will be held at Theatre Royal this month for the 13th year.

Go Dance, which has been created and produced by Theatre Royal’s Creative Learning Team is a unique collaborative event that brings together dancers of all ages and dance styles. Each night features a different programme of showcases from college, school and community dance groups as well as emerging young choreographers.

Go Dance was launched in 2008 and provides a platform for both established dance groups as well as up-and-coming talent.

Opening the Theatre Royal stage as a platform for groups to make, share and perform new work, the festival has become a firm favourite in the dance community calendar with performers aged 8 to 80+ taking part.

This year’s programme highlights include Glasgow based Overdrive Dance Company who will premiere a new dance theatre performance exploring young people’s relationship to mental health. Boys Do(n’t) Cry is a moving and physical portray of the power that support brings during dark times. The work seeks to reduce the stigma and discrimination of young people’s mental health.

Theatre Royal & ShowWorks Young Company will present a piece of physical theatre entitled Fragmented Futures. Written by 13-year-old Mirin Gibson-Brown, the segment will be told through dramatic scenarios, contemporary movement and the socio-political aspirations of the latest generation. Motivated by the desperate plight of fellow teenagers in Ukraine, Mirin and a dynamic group of young performers, explore the state of the world they will inherit and command a change for the sake of humanity.

right2dance, a vibrant community dance company offering opportunities in Renfrewshire for people of all ages and abilities, returns with an energetic new piece they have created inspired by witches, spells and magic.
