A group of Glasgow businesses is championing the charge for people across the city to choose local.
Visit West End - the Byres Road and Lanes Business Improvement District (BID) - has signed the Scotland Loves Local Pledge, a commitment encouraging its members to buy local whenever they can.
It is keen to see other businesses and organisations follow its lead - and has issued a rallying cry for residents to do the same at home too.
The statement of intent has been made ahead of Scotland Loves Local Week, seven days of national activity highlighting the work taking place to make communities fit for the future, underpinned by critical local support.
John Turner, chair of Byres Road and Lanes BID, said: “Choosing local is a simple step we can all take to make a massive difference - supporting businesses, protecting jobs and helping to make the area an even better place in which to live, work and visit.”
Businesses, individuals and organisations of all kinds are being urged to sign the Scotland Loves Local Pledge.
It states: “We will choose local, prioritising the people and businesses around us at every opportunity.”
Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP) is the organisation which spearheads Scotland Loves Local with support from the Scottish Government.
Chief officer Kimberley Guthrie said: “It’s so important that residents and businesses support each other. It’s a cycle that keeps money local for longer and opens so many opportunities.”
Mr Turner, who co-owns a Scottish arts and crafts store in De Courcy’s Arcade, added: “Supporting businesses is at the heart of what the BID does, which is why we were pleased to sign the pledge and would encourage others to do the same.
“The more local people invest in our businesses, the more our businesses can help invest in the future of the West End and wider Glasgow.
“Byres Road and the adjoining Lanes contain a vibrant mix of independent shops, eateries, takeaways and cafes, health and beauty and fitness premises, as well as supermarkets, banks and professional services. Many of the businesses are unique to the area and you won’t find their like anywhere else.
“It is vital that we get behind them all.”
Visit West End leads the charge for people to support enterprises of all kinds in the Byres Road and Lanes areas, with a range of campaigns, events and initiatives. These include the Byres Road Book Festival, which takes place from September 26 to 29.
Scotland Loves Local Week takes place from August 26 until September 1. It will highlight the critical difference that choosing local makes to building stronger, more sustainable, communities.
