The Wedding Singer musical is based on the 1998 Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore hit movie. It's an uplifting romantic comedy with massive 80’s inspired musical numbers, including the memorable original songs; "Somebody Kill Me Please", and "I Wanna Grow Old With You" from the movie.
The Company take to the stage at Glasgow’s Platform Theatre, Easterhouse, from the 31st October - 2nd November.
The show's romantic leads are played by real life best friends; Andi Denny and Kelly Johnston; both professionally trained performers and creatives, they know their theatre. They worked on nearly 20 various shows and concerts together since meeting in 2010, not knowing they would one day be cast as on stage sweethearts.
Andi plays Robbie Hart, a hopeless romantic, lead singer of a wedding band who has been recently jilted, by his rock "goddess" fiancé Linda played by Ruth Trower. Kelly plays Julia, the sweet, supportive lovable recently engaged waitress.
For Kelly this is a dream role to play Julia: “The Wedding Singer is one of my favourite movies and I love the musical just as much. It has been so much fun playing Julia and very different for me as I tend to play the comedy characters rather than the ‘leading lady’ type. It has been a real challenge at times but It is a real bucket list moment that I am not ready to let go of.”
Andi has said his favourite thing about playing Robbie Hart is: “How much of a relatable mess he is. Give me a bundle of cultural references, big reactions and clowning any day. He's a pretty chaotic character, and it's always fun as an actor to get your hands on a challenge like that; how do you find a consistent, charming, likeable way to knit the seven different Robbie's into one performance?”
Supported by an amazing cast with high energy performances and a host of memorable, and hilarious characters, this show is not to be missed.
